Water Therapy, Water Safety, Learn to Swim

“If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”

About Autism Swim, Miramichi

The primary goal for this program is to teach children with Autism how to be safe around any body of water, in a safe, supportive manner that takes into consideration the learning styles of those with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. This goal coincides with the number one reason that parents of any children enroll them in swimming lessons – to help keep them safe. From the ‘Lifesaving Society of Canada’ website – ‘Drowning is fast and silent, but every drowning death is preventable with water safety knowledge and common sense.’ Swimming lessons have been proven to help prevent drownings. People with Autism are drawn to water. Children under the age of 14 with Autism are 160 times more likely to drown than children without Autism. They also tend to have a lack of fear, and to not be able to understand dangerous situations. When you combine these characteristics, you can clearly see the need for Autism specific swimming lessons....“drowning is the leading cause of death in autism…91% of all deaths for children with ASD between 2009-2011 were accidental drownings.”
